FIFA tegen persbureaus: "Betalen of je mond houden"
In Het Financieele Dagblad vandaag een artikel over de ruzie tussen de voetbalbond FIFA en de persbureaus over voetbalfoto's van WK-wedstrijden.
In het artikel wordt pijnlijk duidelijk hoezeer de journalistiek en de marketingmensen van de FIFA in twee verschillende werelden leven. De persbureaus gaan uit van vrije nieuwsgaring, terwijl volgens de FIFA publicatie van foto's onder een beeldrecht valt dat zij aan de hoogste bieder kunnen verkopen.
Zoals de directeur communicatie Markus van de FIFA het uitdrukt: "Wij faciliteren 4500 schrijvende journalisten en 1100 fotografen tijdens het toernooi, die overal gratis toegang krijgen. We kunnen het ook omdraaien: als persbureaus en kranten tijdens de wedstrijd willen publiceren, hadden ze een licentie moeten kopen."
Inmiddels dreigen persbureaus als Reuters, AFP, Getty Images en DPA sponsors van het WK te informeren over het verlies aan exposure door de beperkingen die de FIFA oplegt. Ook bereiden zij een rechtszaak voor om hun recht op vrije nieuwsgaring te bevechten.

Inbraak bij Edwin Smulders
Afgelopen weekend is er ingebroken in het huis van paparazzo Edwin Smulders. Hij verbleef met zijn vrouw in het buitenland en daar hebben de inbrekers dankbaar gebruik van gemaakt. Ze haalden het nieuwbouwhuis in Nigtevegt compleet overhoop en gingen er uiteindelijk vandoor met een plasmatelevisie plus alle sieraden.

FIFA houdt poot stijf over foto's WK
De wereldvoetbalbond FIFA trekt zich terug uit de gesprekken met de World Association of Newspapers (WAN) en enkele grote persbureaus over de conflicten rond de verslaggeving het WK deze zomer. FIFA vindt dat de (foto)journalisten zich deze zomer gewoon aan de door hen opgestelde regels dienen te houden. De regels beperken de journalisten echter in hun verslaggeving. Zo morgen WK-foto's niet op internet gepubliceerd worden gedurende de wedstrijden. Ook de hoeveelheid foto's die gepubliceerd mogen worden is aan banden gelegd. Daarnaast heeft de FIFA regels opgesteld voor redacties hoe foto's in gedrukte media gebruikt mogen worden.

Pictures of the Year International
Pictures of the Year International, one of the world's premier photojournalism competitions, is holding its judging on the MU campus in Columbia Missouri, and more than 38,000 photos were entered into the competition this year.
David Rees, director of photojournalism at MU and coordinator of Pictures of the Year International, said POYi recognizes outstanding efforts of photojournalists in the United States and in the larger international community.
“Pictures of the Year International has been the gold standard for photojournalism since its inception,” Rees said.
2006 is the contest’s 63rd year; it began in 1943. The contest involves a panel of judges viewing slideshows of individual or groups of photos in several categories, divided into the Newspaper/General; Magazine; and Editing/Best Use/Multimedia divisions. The judges vote, and the entry is either “in” or “out.” The weeding process continues until the first, second and third place winners — and some special award winners — in each category are determined.
Rees selects the panel of judges each year by consulting with several people involved in POYi. “We’re looking for a panel that is diverse,” Rees said. “We invite judges that are tops in the field, who have a lot of experience and have a vision for the profession.”
Judging is open to the public, and several members of the community, students and photographers come to watch, enjoy and learn from the judging, Rees said.

Diana-fotografen veroordeeld tot één euro boete
In de nasleep van het dodelijke ongeval van prinses Diana uit 1997 zijn afgelopen vrijdag drie Franse persfotografen door het hof van beroep in Parijs veroordeeld tot het betalen van een symbolische euro boete wegens de schending van de Franse privacy-wetgeving. Dat is woensdag bekendgemaakt.
Prinses Diana kwam in 1997 om het leven bij een auto-ongeluk in een tunnel in Parijs, samen met haar vriend Dodi al-Fayed.
De som moet betaald worden aan Mohammed al-Fayed, de vader van Dodi al-Fayed. De drie persfotografen (Jacques Langevin, Christian Martinez en Eric Chassery) moeten bovendien de kosten betalen om het vonnis in drie nationale of internationale kranten of tijdschriften te laten verschijnen.
De veroordeelde fotografen hadden Diana en Dodi gefotografeerd in de omgeving van het Ritz-hotel. Na het ongeval namen ze ook nog foto's van de twee slachtoffers in de verongelukte wagen.

The Eddie Adams Workshop Launches New Photojournalism Website
BitShelter LLC and the Eddie Adams Workshop today announced the launch of the Workshop's website (www.eddieadamsworkshop.com), which includes an alumni directory, message board, and portfolio pages using technology developed by PhotoShelter (www.PhotoShelter.com), the industry standard for online image archiving and distribution.
Starting in April 2006, the Eddie Adams Workshop will use PhotoShelter's online image management and secure e-commerce systems to bring the annual Workshop's registration process online. The Workshop, now entering its nineteenth year, formerly required applicants to mail their applications and portfolio images.
The Eddie Adams Workshop ("Barnstorm") is an intense four-day gathering of the top professionals in photojournalism, along with 100 carefully selected students. The directory and profiles, which include both faculty and alumni, will serve as tool for editors to find photojournalistic excellence.
Participating faculty has included Eddie Adams, David Kennerly, Mary Ellen Mark, Gordon Parks, Eugene Richards, Joe Rosenthal and Nick Ut.

Politie fotografeert hangjongeren
De politie Zuid-Holland-Zuid slaat foto, naam en adresgegevens van hinderlijke hanggroepjongeren op in een database. Die foto’s zijn via het intranet door alle agenten van het korps te zien. De database is eind maart klaar en bevat dan de leden van zo’n 100 jeugdgroepen.
De wijkagenten maken een foto "als jongeren tot een groep behoren, die voor overlast zorgt", zegt Dineke Mekel, regionaal adviseur jeugd van de politie Zuid-Holland zuid. De jongens hebben niet altijd strafbare feiten gepleegd. Wijkagenten vragen niet altijd toestemming om een jongere op straat te fotograferen.

Canon introduceert 30D
Canon has today announced the EOS 30D, a mild evolution of the EOS 20D. Changes are a subtly redesigned body, spot metering, selectable continuous shooting speed, 100,000 shutter cycle life, a larger LCD monitor and the expected switch from simple image parameters to PictureStyles. From an imaging pipeline point of view this camera has the same sensor (8,2 megapixel) and image processor and the default PictureStyle matches the EOS 20D's default image parameters (hence expect exactly the same imaging performance). Good news also comes in the form of a slightly lower price than the EOS 20D.

Tentoonstelling met ludieke persfoto's in Antwerps IPV
In het Internationaal Perscentrum Vlaanderen (IPV) is donderdagavond een tentoonstelling met persfoto's geopend. Tot en met 10 maart zijn er een reeks ludieke foto's van gewone en bekende Belgen te bekijken.
De tentoonstelling "Sabam Humor Press Photo 2003 and 2004" wordt georganiseerd door de auteursrechtenmaatschappij Sabam en de Belgische foto- en filmpers. De foto's werden genomen door persfotografen tijdens de dagelijkse uitoefening van hun beroep. De foto van Wim Van Goethem die in 2004 de Sabam Photo Award won, een leuk beeld van een vrouwelijke seingever op een plaatselijke wielerwedstrijd, neemt een centrale plaats in de tentoonstelling in.
De tentoonstelling op de gelijkvloerse verdieping van het IPV aan de Antwerpse Grote Markt 40 is elke weekdag gratis te bezoeken tussen 9 en 12 uur en tussen 13 en 17 uur.

Edgar Strietman ontvangt Haagse Fotografieprijs 2005
In juli 2004 stelde het college van burgemeesters en wethouders van Den Haag de jaarlijkse Haagse Fotografieprijs in. Op 15 februari 2006 werd voor de tweede keer de prijs uitgereikt, en wel aan Edgar Strietman. Voor 2005 was het thema "Den Haag zijn we allemaal".
Alle genomineerde foto's zijn tot 15 april 2006 te zien in het tentoonstellingsgedeelte van het Haags Gemeentearchief, Spui 70 te Den Haag.

James Nachtwey
Vandaag verschijnt in The Boston Globe een artikel over James Nachtwey, de vermaarde fotojournalist. Nachtwey werd geïnterviewd in zijn "Garden View" hotelkamer in het Ritz-Carlton Boston. (Vierhonderdvijftig tot duizendvijftig dollar per nacht. Tamelijk luxe voor iemand die zich gewoonlijk als een ascetische monnik profileert...)
